Connecting people to nature

What is Ecotherapy?

Modern western culture teaches us that we are separate and somehow superior to nature. It is simply a resource to be exploited. That it not only wrong - it is dangerous. It’s led to ecological destruction and climate change.

We are part of a complicated and interconnected web of life, so our mental and physical health cannot be separated from the health of the planet. We are part of nature and nature is part of us. We know this on a subconscious level, and this part of us is crying out to heal the rift created by thousands of years of western ‘civilization’.

Ecotherapy is about working with this to rebuild our emotional connection with the natural world. The first step towards healing is knowing that we are part of something bigger than ourselves. But in addition to this, being in nature also has a relaxing, restoring and revitalising effect on us. When facilitated properly, this process can be incredibly powerful.

    Mindful walks

Walking is one of the best ways to experience the therapeutic benefits of nature, because it’s something most of us are familiar and comfortable with. However, mindful walking is quite different to walking the dog.

wild wellbeing, Caroline White in nature

Caroline White

My love affair with nature started in childhood. I was lucky to grow up in the 1970s, when it was perfectly normal for parents to push their children out of the door and not expect them back until after dark. I lived in the countryside so I spent most of my outdoors; helping out on a local farm, walking and observing animals and birds…. MORE

  • "Working with Caroline out in nature has really opened my eyes to the fact that I spend most of my time stuck inside my head. I’m constantly thinking and worrying about things and then assuming that my thoughts are reality. I now understand that thoughts are simply thoughts and that my experience of the world is completely different to anyone else’s. This process is helping me know myself better and like myself more."

    Jo

  • "This whole experience has been transformative and revelatory. I feel worlds better, not just after the sessions but also now I’m able to take it back home with me. It’s helped me to just sit in the moment, slow down and relax in myself. The sessions have really taught me how to connect with my own physical senses, so I’m more aware of when I’m tensing up and getting stressed. Now I know how to stop this from happening"

    Kat

  • "Thank you Caroline, for making this experience so wonderfull. It was a relaxing, informative and fun day spent in nature. We did a group activity, making a mandala on the forest floor to celebrate the Celtic festival of Beltane. It was very special."

    Caz

  • "What a great day! It was fun, informative, relaxing, mindful and energising all at the same time. I particularly enjoyed learning about the Five Pathways to Nature Connection, both from an intellectual perspective and through actually experiencing them out on the land."

    Roz

  • "I never realised how powerful it could be to simply feel the grass under my feet, the breeze in my hair or the sun on my skin. No matter how stressed I am or what is going on in my life, I now know that doing a mindful walk will always make me feel better."
